Penang to Langkawi: the ferry is gone, here is what works

This is the single most common piece of out-of-date advice about travelling in Peninsular Malaysia. The Swettenham Pier to Kuah service was suspended during the pandemic and has not resumed. Timetables for it are still published, still indexed, and still wrong — one page currently ranking for this route carries the year 2025 in its title and the word CANCELLED in brackets, which tells you how long the confusion has been running.

Option one: fly

AirAsia and Firefly both fly Penang (PEN) to Langkawi (LGK) directly. The flight itself is roughly 35 to 40 minutes. Fares are usually modest, though they climb steeply in the December to March window when everyone else is also going.

Treat the flight time as the smallest part of the journey. Door to door — a car to Penang airport, bag drop and security, the flight, then the drive from Langkawi airport to wherever you are staying — you should budget around three hours. That is still less than half the overland option.

Option two: overland to Kuala Perlis, then the ferry

Ferries to Langkawi still run frequently, just not from Penang. They leave from two mainland jetties further north: Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah. Kuala Perlis is the closer of the two and the crossing to Kuah is around an hour and a quarter. Departures run through the day, roughly from early morning to early evening, at intervals of thirty to sixty minutes.

Getting to the jetty is the part that costs you the day. From George Town you first cross to the mainland at Butterworth, then take a bus or a car north to Kuala Perlis, then wait for a sailing. Realistically that is five to seven hours of travelling before you board, and the ferry does not run late into the evening, so a late start means an unplanned night on the mainland.

Fly. On a ten-day itinerary the overland route costs you a day of beach or a day of George Town, and it buys you nothing except the ferry itself. The calculation changes if you are heading north anyway, if you are travelling with a fear of flying, or if you simply want the crossing — the approach to Kuah by sea is genuinely better than the approach by runway.
