Getting around
Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi: fly, or train and ferry
Langkawi is an island an hour’s flight from Kuala Lumpur, or most of a day by train, taxi and ferry. Since the 2026 ferry cuts, the gap between the two has only grown.
Checked
By air
AirAsia (from KLIA Terminal 2), Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air fly KLIA to Langkawi, AirAsia most often. Firefly flies turboprops from Subang, which is closer to central Kuala Lumpur and much quicker to get through. Low-cost one-way fares are often around RM 60–160 depending on how far ahead you book, and climb in December to March.
Langkawi airport is on the west of the island, about 15 to 20 minutes from Pantai Cenang, the main beach. Grab works on the island but has fewer drivers than the mainland; the airport taxis charge fixed zone fares rather than running a meter.
Overland: train, taxi, ferry
- 1ETS train from KL Sentral to Arau — about 4 h 30 min on Express to 5 h 20 min on Gold, roughly RM 73–108 depending on class and date.
- 2Taxi from Arau to the Kuala Perlis jetty — about 18 km, 20 to 30 minutes, around RM 25–30.
- 3Ferry from Kuala Perlis to Kuah — about 1 h 15 min, RM 45 one way for a foreign passport holder since April 2026.
The alternative is the train to Alor Setar and a short taxi or bus to Kuala Kedah, whose ferry takes about 1 h 45 min and costs RM 55. Either way the ferry is the constraint: since March 2026 the operator has run about three sailings a day per route, down from five or more, because of a diesel price shock. Time the train to a sailing, not the other way round, and expect an unplanned night on the mainland if you miss it.

When the overland route makes sense
Almost only when you are already in the north — in Penang, or on your way to the Thai border — or when you want the sea crossing for its own sake. From Kuala Lumpur, the train-and-ferry route spends a whole holiday day to save little or nothing on a low-cost fare.
