Getting around

Getting around Peninsular Malaysia’s west coast

Four systems move you up the west coast: one railway, a web of intercity coaches, short flights, and two ferries that matter. Knowing which one each leg belongs to is most of the planning.

Checked

The four systems

  • The ETS train. KTMB’s electric intercity line is the spine of the west coast, from the Thai border through Butterworth, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur and south towards Johor Bahru. Fast and comfortable, with a handful of trains a day on each stretch — the constraint is seats, not speed.
  • Intercity coaches. Anything off the railway runs by coach, and from Kuala Lumpur that mostly means TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan), the southern terminal on the city rail network — not KL Sentral.
  • Short flights. Penang and Langkawi both have airports with direct flights from Kuala Lumpur. For the island at the end of the route, flying is the only option that does not cost a day.
  • Two ferries. The 10-to-15-minute crossing from Butterworth to George Town, and the mainland ferries to Langkawi from Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis — the second of which was cut to about three sailings a day in 2026.

Three things that changed recently

  • Cash is going. KTMB has been cashless since January 2025, and so is the Penang ferry. Carry a card and set up a Touch ’n Go or similar e-wallet.
  • Fares rose through 2026. A fuel price shock pushed up airfares and ferry fares and cut ferry capacity. Every fare on these pages is dated; treat them as an order of magnitude.
  • ETS Silver is gone. The all-stations train ended on 31 December 2025. The classes now are Express, Platinum and Gold.
